Hello
My name is Kiana Acevedo, and I’ve worked in Early Childhood Education for 10 years. My experience ranges from being a professional nanny, working closely with families and their children, to teaching in a variety of classroom settings. I am passionate about nature, animals, and enjoy expressing creativity through watercolors. I live with my partner Nathan and three dogs; Cato, Winston and Cannoli.
My Story
In my years working across various classroom settings, I’ve seen how much can be lost in the rush of daily routines. The pressure to move on to the next task often overshadows opportunities for meaningful connections with children, leaving little time to be fully present in the moment. Both teachers and children can become burned out, especially in programs with long hours, leading to dysregulation and an increased need for space from constant social interaction. After completing college, I realized the workforce didn’t always foster the sense of connection and collaborative learning that I valued. Too often, I found myself in environments focused on efficiency over relationships, limiting opportunities to grow alongside others. These experiences have driven me to create spaces where connection, presence, and mutual learning are prioritized—for both children and educators.
With a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Maine at Farmington, I have developed a deep understanding of various educational approaches, including Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf. My education and experience extend beyond traditional settings; my studies abroad in Reggio Emilia enriched my perspective on their renowned educational philosophy, which emphasizes a child-centered approach and the importance of the environment in fostering learning. These experiences have deeply informed my belief that every child thrives when given the space and respect to explore their curiosity, with teachers acting as guides who create a secure, nurturing environment where each child feels valued and capable.
This commitment to connection extends to my dedication to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) work. I am passionate about culturally responsive education and believe that effective DEI efforts must begin with inner reflection, confronting personal biases, and engaging in an ongoing journey of learning and understanding others' experiences. Through continuous self-examination and staying informed about diverse perspectives, I strive to ensure that my teaching practices are inclusive, equitable, and welcoming to all children. In doing so, I aim to create an educational environment where every child feels seen, respected, and valued.
Outside the classroom, my love for nature complements my educational philosophy. Whether hiking with my three dogs or simply spending time outdoors, I find that my connection to nature enriches both my personal life and my professional practice. This sense of exploration and adventure informs my belief in the importance of curiosity and discovery as key elements in a child’s growth and learning journey. Ultimately, I see my role as an educator as someone who learns alongside children, embracing their natural creativity while providing the stable foundation they need to thrive.
